Not all of the inclusions and back
wall reflections are discernable when evaluating through
thickness conditions of plate, pipe wall and aboveground storage
tank floors. The application of B-Scan technology has improved
the ability to make an assessment of pitting, inclusions and
wall loss due to corrosion and erosion.
B-Scan presentation of ultrasonic
evaluation of an inspected area of plate or pipe essentially,
converts all of the A-Scan recordings and compiles them into a
single path through thickness profile of the areas of interest.
This side view or profile gives the inspector the capability of
defining pitting and corrosive conditions more accurately.
Pitting configurations do not
always lend themselves to accurate wall loss dimensions with
conventional A-Scan technology. Thus, a thickness unit reading
back-wall reflection has the potential of being fooled into
balancing or averaging the multiple readings on and near a
pitted area of corrosion.
B-Scan
profiles can be secured rapidly and in real time. The system
has the ability to apply a water-couplant through the carriage
device that holds the transducer. This combination of
technology allows for a very quick scanning technique to be
deployed. Additionally, the carriage has the capability to
encode the distance traveled relative to the thickness
measured. This allows the profile of the work piece to be
accurately detailed and allows for repeatability of inspection.
